All of the rivals in the AFC West are worthy of scorn. But in many ways the Chargers are the worst. As a new fan, I came on board midway thorough 2009. At the time San Diego had won 13 of the last games, and there was no end in sight. Under former Raider coach Norv Turner the Chargers seemed to have the Raiders number year in and year out.
Doing some research I saw that in past years Oakland had an 18 consecutive win streak over San Diego, and that Raiders are still way ahead in the overall matchups. Then there’s the issue of the Chargers winning so few times in the post season, including their ZERO superbowl wins. So there’s no question that historically the Raiders are the superior team. But I think all of us felt pretty nervous about these southern Californians and their cocky attitudes…
Then last year, against all odds in a chaotic, sloppy and almost unbelievable win, the Raider broke that streak and crushed the hated Chargers in a last minute victory at the Coliseum. That may have been the turning point for the current Raiders team, giving them the confidence to realize that they have what it takes to overcome the odds.
Later in the season the Chargers were humbled at the Qual, thoroughly dominated and manhandled by the Raiders who suddenly were doing everything right. When Jason Campbell ran into the endzone on the fake handoff, it was just icing on the cake. The game is up and a new winning streak has begun!
Hard to say if this is the most hated rival of the Oakland Raiders, but if not, it’s gotta be close!! Can’t wait for the 2011 season when hopefully the Raiders will extend their streak to 4-0….
